Did you have or know anyone who had an experience similar to the girl who was accepted to MIT because of film class?
What lessons have you learned in an art class that have enriched your life in areas beyond the arts?
This article from the OC Register discusses the many reasons why art is an important part of education, not just for future artists. It gives some great, real-life examples of how the arts help make well-rounded students.

art does matter. Without it we're basic animals. With it, our spirit soars!

"her four years of film production classes prepared her for her responses during the interview at MIT. Her answers to all the questions were based upon her experiences in her media arts/film classes."

The arts aren't just an outlet for creativity, but they allow for an array of experiences that cater to the development of young minds. The only reason I did well in school and college was due to the determination and discipline I found from learning a musical instrument: if you want to be any good, you have to put forth the effort. As I went through high school, I was one of few who had these qualities, and many of those that did also were avid artists/musicians. It made the development of good study habits and new ways of thinking much easier. I was also afforded the opportunity to attend an expensive college due to the scholarship and support I received from the music department, despite being a chemistry major.

I love the idea of arts coming back to the mainstream classroom. As a geologist and doodler, I appreciate and use my training from the visual arts all the time. In geology, it is especially important to have your spatial awareness developed so that you an visualize and manipulate the strata and other variables in your mind's eye to be able to find and use the resources appropriately. Art classes are how I learned to see these abstract ideas an led make me an effective force at my job.

Great article! Without art, core curriculum would be the only focus in school and deter a adolescent's chance to express themselves through creative means.

It's great that so many people in class are finding articles in support of art education.

This is a great article. Many of my classmates weren't the most motivated in academics, but never dropped out due to their time in orchestra and jazz class. They were so motivated to continue pursuing the things they loved, they managed to pass and complete what was needed to be done. Elective classes like art and music encourages making mistakes and to learn from that experience. As an adult, I think it becomes progressively difficult to admit and accept mistakes. But if they gain an experience like this early on and know that they've improved from it, then I believe it will become more easy to move forward without shame or embarrassment in any obstacle they face in the future.

Very inspiring article! We are problem solvers as artists and this lesson was applied by a student in the article to great results! I will remember this for my students!
